When to make your Medicare choices

You can sign up for Medicare during a 7-month window. This is known as your Medicare Initial Enrollment Period. It begins 3 months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month and ends 3 months after you turn 65.

It’s important to sign up during your enrollment window. If you do not sign up during this time, you may have to pay an extra amount, called a late enrollment penalty. Or you may have a gap in health insurance coverage.
